Here, we present a standout archival bag in which the contrast between materials is beautifully expressed.
By boldly alternating deep dark-brown and black leather, and running a vertical strip of black ray (stingray) leather—distinguished by its fine, shagrin-like grain—through the center, this piece delivers a strongly graphic composition within the classic shoulder-bag silhouette.

The dark-brown leather panel that dominates the front is finished with an understated, smooth texture. Overlapping it at the center with ray leather that has a dense, granular structure creates a clear contrast even within the same dark tones—so from a distance it appears refined and composed, yet up close you can fully appreciate the complexity of its texture.

Notably, the ray-leather part that runs vertically through the center is both a decorative element and a structural feature of the bag itself. By threading it through the gold-colored geometric hardware set at the opening, the gaze is naturally guided toward the center, further enhancing the bag’s elongated proportions.
Moreover, the front brown, the black that runs from the sides to the back, and the brown that encircles the bottom create a multi-panel color composition that is not limited to a simple two-tone scheme. It is a palette that comes together only when the bag is viewed as a three-dimensional object. It is a design that seems to translate the Maison’s deep awareness of form—cultivated since Cristóbal Balenciaga—into leather goods.

Even in the hardware, the colors are not unified into a single shade. Warm gold is used at the center, while a sharp silver tone is paired for the shoulder buckle and at the bottom. By intentionally allowing two metal tones that would normally create a different impression to coexist, the piece adds a sense of experimentation typical of the 2000s to a classically grounded approach to materials.
While the body itself adopts a neat, elongated form, the sides are given a gusset in supple black leather. As a result, it looks structured when seen from the front, yet from the side a natural fullness emerges—carefully considered down to everyday storage functionality.

Inside, an ecru fabric lining is used. The BALENCIAGA.PARIS logo is subtly embossed onto the dark-brown leather patch, resulting in a quiet finish that contrasts with the bold design of the exterior. Rather than pushing the brand name to the forefront, it creates the sense of “Balenciaga” through material and form itself—an appeal that is uniquely characteristic of this era.
Taking into account the tag markings and the leather panel-switching design, this work is best understood as an archive piece from the Nicolas Ghesquière period, produced around 2008 to 2009. During that time, Balenciaga offered leather goods that combined Cherche Midi and other styles, ray leather, patent leather, and chains of mixed materials—this piece reflects that era’s distinctive material experimentation and structural aesthetic quite vividly.

Another major attraction is that you can feel Balenciaga of the 2000s from a completely different direction than the City-style motorcycle bags, which are strongly recognized today as a Maison symbol. We especially recommend this piece for those who want to enjoy the brand’s archive more deeply, and for those who see value in experimental designs that existed only in that specific period—rather than well-known icons.
For styling, wearing it crossbody with an impeccably tailored jacket or a long coat and slacks allows the ray-leather texture and the two-tone composition to serve as a tasteful accent. Pairing it with a shirt or a draped top and a long skirt lets you enjoy an even more elegant impression while taking advantage of the elongated silhouette.

The appeal of Balenciaga in the Nicolas Ghesquière era lies precisely in the fact that it brings together classic leather, exotic materials, hardware in contrasting tones, and an architectural panel structure into a single bag—while also translating it into a size and shoulder specifications that work naturally for everyday wear. This is a piece worthy of a special collection, allowing you to incorporate the experimental spirit the Maison held in the late 2000s into today’s styling.
