ISSEY MIYAKE
"ISSEY MIYAKE" 00AW Simple detail wool tailored jacket
We will be introducing precious archive pieces from ISSEY MIYAKE, whose philosophy is to create something that has never been seen before, by uncompromisingly pursuing both innovation and everyday life for the comfort of people's daily lives, without being bound by existing values.
This exquisite jacket, with its minimalist and refined silhouette, was created as part of Issey Miyake's tailored line in the fall/winter 2000 season.
At the time, Issey Miyake was emphasizing the idea of "wrapping the body in a single piece of fabric," as exemplified by A-POC, and functionality rooted in everyday life, and even in tailored items, he was known for stripping away decoration and designs that combined ease of movement with structured lines. This jacket is a piece that fits right into that trend, avoiding excessive design while still being balanced to create a strong presence when worn.
The front is a single-breasted three-button shirt, and the slightly longer length is impressive. It naturally lowers the waist and emphasizes the vertical lines, making the body look slimmer and more slender.
The notch lapels are designed to be modest and narrow, and there is only one simple pocket on the chest, which expresses a mature, relaxed feel through the use of white space rather than added decoration, a characteristic of Issey Miyake. The shoulders are not overly padded, and the set-in sleeves leave a natural roundness, making for a tailored yet relaxed fit.
The fabric has just the right thickness and suppleness, and its matte texture doesn't reflect light too strongly, giving it a soft feel despite being a black jacket, and a finish that gives it a sense of depth when viewed up close. The design minimizes unnecessary thickness from the body to the hem so that the body falls neatly even when worn with the front open, and the smooth full lining on the back minimizes interference with innerwear and minimizes stress when putting on the sleeves.
Overall, the pieces deliberately avoid trendy details and meticulously balance the basics, such as the angle of the lapel, the position of the buttons and the curve of the hem, to create a look that is suitable for all body types and genders, yet has a quiet yet elegant appearance - this is an added value unique to the 2000 A/W period. Not only will it not feel outdated when paired with modern items, but its "ordinaryness in a good sense" will become the axis that tightens up the entire style.
In terms of styling, you can pair a simple knit or cut-and-sew with straight-cut trousers for a modern, set-up look, or you can throw it on over a shirt and tie it up for a smart look that's not too formal.
