From its heritage as a saddlery, HERMÈS has cultivated an unwavering sincerity toward materials and a quiet, functional beauty that sits close to the body, continuing to elevate it into the modern wardrobe. Here, we are pleased to introduce a highly precious piece that embodies the anonymity and architectural beauty unique to Martin Margiela's era.

This piece uses a camel-colored, refined wool fabric, and while preserving the silhouette of a classic trench coat, it layers drapes that flow along the front and back, quietly intersecting HERMÈS's refined luxury with Margiela's pared-down aesthetic.

The outer fabric is predominantly virgin wool with a small amount of elastane, offering the wool's characteristic refined warmth, while flexibly conforming to the body's movements; unlike a typical cotton gabardine trench, it possesses a luxurious expression with drape and softness.

The front is not designed to look strongly buttoned; instead, a placket drapes naturally from the collar to the hem, creating a vertical line from the chest when worn, which, while conveying a sense of openness, keeps the overall silhouette clean.

The collar is slightly oversized; when laid down, it presents a classic, orderly trench look, and when raised, it adds dimensionality at the neck, offering a discreet, intellectual presence that is characteristic of HERMÈS during the Margiela era.

The shoulder area is formed with a soft line close to a raglan, avoiding a sharp shoulder edge and letting it fall naturally to create a silhouette that envelops the body; the cuffs are adorned with a matching fabric belt and a calfskin buckle engraved with the HERMÈS mark, ensuring that craft from the maison resides even in the minimalist details.

The back is particularly striking, with a deeply split cape-like yoke overlapping at the center; as you walk, the fabric opens slightly, giving the rear view quiet movement and depth. Rather than adding decorations, the beauty is founded on the overlapping fabric and the structure itself, which is precisely the added value unique to this coat.

Inside, silk lining is used, allowing smooth sleeve movement, and though it is a wool coat, it offers a comfortable fit that does not rely solely on heft. The use of calfskin in the ancillary materials also adds natural depth to the buckles and details, subtly tying together Hermès's leather aesthetic with garment construction.

Regarding the era, you can verify a white, borderless HERMÈS PARIS tag at the collar and a separate MADE IN FRANCE tab; furthermore, the inner tag's Japanese washing instructions adhere to the old JIS standard through November 2016, and it is not the brown-bordered tag style seen from the Galliano era onward, allowing us to reliably present this piece as dating from 1997–2003, when Martin Margiela handled Hermès's women's line.

During the Margiela period, Hermès did not make a statement with logos or ornamentation; instead it pursued a philosophy of high-quality materials, distance from the body, and clothing that functions beautifully in daily life. This coat exactly symbolises that value. It may appear very quiet, but every element—from the amount of fabric, to the collar rise, to the back structure, to the buckle on the cuffs—carries meaning and possesses the power to refine the wearer's presence into a beautiful silhouette.

It is recommended not only for those who already own a classic trench but also for those seeking a softer, quieter, more intellectual coat, as it easily integrates into everyday wear and offers a lasting sense of quality that is not instantly flashy, but communicates its excellence up close.

Styling-wise, pairing it with drapey wide-leg trousers and a crisp shirt yields a refined look that leverages Hermès during the Margiela period; adding a long skirt or high-quality leather shoes enhances the soft drape and the vertical silhouette, resulting in an elegant and fashion-forward silhouette that transcends gender. It embodies the maison's historical significance, the rarity of the Margiela era, and practicality for a modern wardrobe, making it a fitting piece for the MOOD Special Collection.
