HERMES
-SPECIAL- "HERMÈS Paris" 1978–1981 Atelier Prêt-à-Porter Cashmere Coat
There is slight scuffing.
We are pleased to present you with this exquisite piece from HERMÈS, which began as a saddlery workshop near the Madeleine Church in Paris and whose philosophy is to "pass on the tradition of craftsmanship" and "the joy of travel."
This cashmere coat was produced in the Paris atelier between 1978 and 1981, during the early years of Jean-Louis Dumas's reign.
The off-white rayon satin tag has the words HERMÈS PARIS embroidered in black thread, with "MADE IN FRANCE" written vertically to the left. The embroidery thread is a three-dimensional chain stitch made from twisted rayon and cotton, and was embroidered on a Cornely manual embroidery machine.
The lining is striped with the Hermès logo and features red piping, and the hem and placket are both hand-stitched and machine-sewn, a style unique to atelier production at the time.
The buttons are made of resin with a metal-like finish, a design seen during a period of material transition from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. These multiple elements combine to determine this item as a product of the Atelier Pret period, made between 1978 and 1981.
The softly brushed cashmere gently absorbs light, and the deep navy creates a gentle depth in this piece.
At the time, Hermès used a technique of hand-shrunking extremely fine cashmere to create an even, smooth surface without pilling. The resulting "light-absorbing texture" is a beauty unique to that era that is difficult to replicate with current materials.
The three-button front and notch lapels create a streamlined silhouette, while the chest darts and princess seams create a graceful waist. The soft flare at the hem adds elegance to every step.
This construction line embodies the philosophy that Hermès advocated at the time, "elegance born from function," and gives a sense of the Maison's unique elegance, which applied the center of gravity design of horse tack to the balance of clothing.
The lining is made of shiny acetate with the Hermès logo woven into it, and the red piping subtly accentuates the look. The seams show traces of hand-stitching, and the slight undulation of the piping reflects the artisan's work. The acetate's characteristic smooth texture and shading are testament to the quality of this garment, made in an atelier in the early 1980s.
The structure is three-dimensional, with rounded shoulder lines and a straight drop. This is the first completed form that derived women's elegance from the construction of riding wear, and the tension between the material and stitching gives it a serene and elegant appearance.
During this period, HERMÈS did not loudly proclaim the luxury of its materials, but instead demonstrated its quality through the "breath of the tailoring itself."
This piece dates back to a time when the brand was moving beyond "mode" and pursuing "constructed beauty in everyday life," and it embodies that philosophy in the most beautiful way.
MOOD believes this coat is perfect for those who want to impress with quality rather than decoration, and who want to exude a quiet elegance in their movements and demeanor.
It has a timeless quality that stands the test of time, and a depth that can be worn naturally by both men and women.
To style it, layer it over a structured jacket or knitwear for an airy look, or pair it with long boots for a vertical flow that further accentuates the shadows of the silhouette.
It will blend seamlessly into the current minimalist look and exude a quiet strength.
Please take this opportunity.
