“HERMÈS” 90’s gloria soli carrè silk scarf

Founded in 1837 as a harness workshop, Hermès has continued to produce products that fuse exceptional craftsmanship with artistry. Here, we present an archive design piece that vividly expresses the maison’s worldview and symbolism.

Centered around a magnificent sun motif, this masterpiece combines a philosophical message with intricate decoration in its graphic design.

The design title of this piece is "GLORIA SOLI," featuring a sun motif with a human expression at the center, surrounded by radiating rays and decorative patterns in a composition that envelops the motif. Around the outer edge, Roman numerals are arranged, creating a circular structure reminiscent of a sundial, symbolically representing the concept of time rather than just decoration.

Furthermore, the expanding light from the center features multiple color sections arranged fan-shaped, skillfully combining vibrant shades of green, blue, and orange. This color scheme is a distinctive feature often seen in Hermès scarves from the 1990s, offering a glamorous yet intellectually appealing aesthetic. Between the light rays, small tree motifs are arranged, and along with the dot pattern reminiscent of the sky and stars, a cosmic sense of vastness is carefully depicted.

The design was created by artist Joachim Metz, known for producing many iconic graphics for Hermès in the 1990s. His style is characterized by blending heraldic compositions with intricate decorative elements. In this piece, the universal motif of the sun is used as a central theme, elevating philosophical concepts such as time and fate into decorative art, which is very impressive.

The material is made of high-quality silk twill, a hallmark of Hermès. The finely woven fabric has a moderate thickness and a soft drape. When light hits it, the silk’s characteristic depth and luster create a more three-dimensional appearance of the print colors, further enhancing the decorative appeal. The edges feature the maison’s iconic Rouleau border, and the plush three-dimensional effect created by hand-stitched hemming gives a soft expression that machine sewing cannot replicate.

Regarding the era, the initial release of the "GLORIA SOLI" design was in 1994, and the specifications of the care label attached to this item provide significant clues. The tag is a horizontally long white label with both French and English text, and it includes washing instructions, confirming that it is not a single-language French tag from before the 1980s. On the other hand, it does not match the large tags or QR code labels seen after the 2010s, indicating it is not a current-generation product. Considering these objective factors, it is highly likely that this item was produced in a lot between the initial design release in 1994 and the early 2000s.

The title "GLORIA SOLI" is Latin for "Glory of the Sun," and it is said to symbolically embody the philosophy of Carpe Diem. The reason this scarf has been loved for many years is partly because it expresses the philosophical message of cherishing the present moment through artistic decoration.

As a way to incorporate it into your outfit, simply wrapping it around a plain shirt or a light jacket can add an elegant accent to your look. It can also subtly elevate the overall style when draped over the shoulders or tied to a bag. Additionally, pairing it with a classic coat or a subdued dress allows you to enjoy a style that exudes Hermès's signature intellectual elegance.
