To break what’s proper, first wear what’s proper.

It can also be recreated with patterns and fabrics reminiscent of British clothing, such as houndstooth, chalk stripes, and tweed.

The key is not to mix classic and Punk in halves, but to collide a single out-of-place element onto an already completed formal look.

HOW TO BUILD

First, create a formal center line with a white shirt, a slim black tie, and a tailored jacket. Don’t limit the trousers to a slim fit—choose longer ones that feature a center line.

Next, layer the riders and black leather blouson on the very outside. Narrow the accessories to black and metal, and place heavy boots at the feet.

Even without band T-shirts or damaged knits, Punk’s inversion can be expressed through the clash of formal wear and leather alone.

London Punk is not simply a style of wearing rough, distressed clothes. It is a culture that makes discomfort with existing class, manners, gender, and formal wear visible through the re-combination of garments.

In the 1970s, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren set up shop on the King’s Road, mixing motorcycle leathers, military uniforms, fetish wear, and chains or safety pins. The V&A presents these as representative Punk looks.

However, Westwood did not discard English tradition; instead, by quoting historical garments and tailoring, she inverted its meaning. The V&A also notes how, from the Punk era, Punk playfully parodied British dressing while handling traditional tailoring in its own distinctive way.

This look also uses the same structure. After completing an English order of Glen check, a white shirt, and a narrow tie, the riders jacket breaks it from the outside.

The foundation is a vintage Glen check setup. The double-breasted jacket has a longer length, and the trousers have sufficient width from the thigh down to the hem.

For the inner layer, pair Dior’s white shirt, cut to follow the body, with a Saint Laurent narrow tie. By placing a slim shirt and tie inside a relaxed setup, a vertical line of tension forms at the center.

Then, layer a black riders jacket over the top, letting the checked jacket show from the hem and collar. Rather than expressing Punk with a single riders piece, the double-layer structure with a tailored jacket conveys rebellion and formal wear at the same time.

What establishes this look is the contrast between leather and Glen check.

Riders create strong lines outward through their sheen, thickness, metal hardware, and diagonal zippers. By contrast, a setup features a fine check pattern and a soft drape, wrapping the body vertically. By placing hard black on the outside and delicate patterns on the inside, it lets Punk coexist without fully erasing the classic—highlighting their differences.

Saint Laurent’s narrow tie tightens the center of the shirt and jacket, creating an axis for your gaze against the leather’s visual volume.

Burberry’s bag connects to the biker jacket through black leather, and its neatly proportioned handbag shape also makes it belong to the setup side. It’s the piece that lives between rebellion and classic.

Thom Browne’s rubber boots aren’t typical combat boots; they feature details reminiscent of classic shoes and a thick sole. Even at your feet, you repeat the same move as the whole LOOK—“heavily deforming British shoes.”

Since you already have a proper foundation of a white shirt, a narrow tie, and glen check, layering the biker jacket won’t turn it into a simple rock look.

Without adding multiple Punk items, use the biker jacket as the single biggest destructive element. Because the contrast concentrates in one place, your intention comes through clearly.

Give the jacket and pants some width, and set the shirt and tie to be slim. With the outside’s added volume and the thin line through the center, the whole look doesn’t end up looking too heavy.

What should remain is the clear opposition between British formalwear and black leather. The more you don’t add damage or decoration even on the inside—and the more seriously you refine the classic parts—the stronger the rebellious energy will look on the outside.

Glen check can be swapped for houndstooth or stripes, and biker jackets for black leather bombers. If you don’t have rubber boots, you can recreate the idea of seriously deforming classics with chunky brogue shoes or square-toe boots.

When you use band T-shirts, damaged knits, tartan, chains, and studs all at once, it just looks like you’ve laid out Punk symbols. And there’s no need to wear the setup carelessly or crumple it. Keep the shirt, tie, and collar area neat; let the biker jacket handle the “breaking” role.
