There are two types of changes that occur with the aging of clothing.

One is a change where time becomes a “facial expression.” The other is a change where time results in “wear and tear.” Both may look like “oldness,” but the former amplifies charm, while the latter diminishes value. The key to distinguishing them lies not so much in mood or aesthetic sense, but in the material and structure, and the “restoration method” provided by the brand.

Beautiful aging may seem accidental, but the “direction of change” can be read.

An easy example is denim. Indigo dye is said to not dye evenly to the core of the thread but to adhere mainly to the surface, and through friction and washing, the surface color wears off, revealing the white core, creating a variation in shade. This way, “expression appears only on worn areas,” and the pattern reflects living habits. This is not deterioration but a visible record of wear.


On the other hand, fading caused by ultraviolet light or display lighting has a different nature.

In the context of preservation and display, it is repeatedly warned that light damages fibers and dyes, causing irreversible changes. In other words, this is not an “intentional pattern,” but a “destruction of material.”

Even with fading, whether “expression” emerges through friction or “material weakens” due to light—this difference determines whether time works in your favor or not.

Clothes that last are made not so much to resist damage but to be “restorable.”

The most iconic example is waxed cotton. It was reported that in the 1921 catalog, there was a service called “re-oiling” for re-waterproofing and repairs, which was already available at that time, indicating an early system for “repair and reuse.”

With such a system, the loss of wax or scuffs is not the “end,” but an entry point to the next process. Time is not seen as wear but as a “timing for maintenance.” As a result, aging accumulates as layers rather than dirt.


What’s important here is that repair is not an afterthought kindness but is embedded from the start within the brand experience. Clothes with a regeneration system tend to maintain their value even in secondary markets. Time does not diminish value but tends to work in its support.


【Condition for beautiful aging 3: The material has a “growing” character】

The reason leather’s patina (gloss and deepening color) is appreciated is that it does not simply get dirty; instead, its texture and reflectivity change with use, making the appearance “more refined.”

However, leather is not万能. Research shows that deterioration of leather can progress through complex factors like oxidation and hydrolysis, and under certain conditions, cracks, powdering, and hardening can occur, making restoration difficult.

In other words, aging of leather is not a promise of beauty but a zone where “beautiful change” and “fragile deterioration” coexist. Remaining pieces are those that have successfully managed these zones.

Finally, there is a often-overlooked axis: whether the “change” is treated as an “artistic intention.”

In the fields of preservation and restoration, it is shown that surface color and texture are part of the intention, and how they change over time is a subject of discussion.

In fashion, too, products that designers and brands consider “complete including aging” are less likely to succumb to time. Conversely, clothes that do not anticipate aging tend to become “just old” the moment time intervenes.
