HERMES
“HERMES” 60’s Cuivreries silk carré scarf
Since its founding in 1837, HERMÈS has fused artistry and practicality at a higher level, drawing on the craftsmanship developed as a harness maker. We are pleased to present an exceptional archive piece that quietly tells the brand’s origin.
The design of this piece is characterized by a composition in which a meticulously detailed pattern inspired by decorative hardware for harnesses radiates outward, conveying visual depth and a sense of balanced order.
At the center, two horses are placed, and the copperwork motifs drawn around them function not merely as decoration, but as a representation of harness culture itself—HERMÈS’s roots. In this sense, it can be said to be an iconographic expression closely tied to the brand’s history.
Furthermore, this work is Cuivreries, a masterpiece published in 1963 by Françoise de la Perrière. The fact that no copyright notice can be seen within the image, and that the balance and placement of the logo’s lettering match the specifications from the 1960s through the 1970s, gives it the background to be judged as an item from the first edition in 1963 through the mid-1970s. We would like you to appreciate this point as a significant value.
The texture, created by the characteristic twill weave of silk, combines an appropriate firmness with a smooth feel. Unlike today’s light, airy silks, it has a slightly thicker, more substantial weight—creating depth in the drape and a pleasing expression in which the pattern softly comes into view with every movement.
In addition, the monochrome color scheme plays a role in emphasizing the metal’s texture and the play of light and shadow without relying on color. As though wrapped in the serenity of a precise technical drawing, you can feel the intellectually refined beauty distinctive to vintage pieces.
The border is finished with llautonnage (rolled edging) by skilled artisans. The edge, with a slight sense of fullness, gives the entire scarf a soft, dimensional presence—another detail that reveals consistent craftsmanship down to the smallest elements. It is not to be overlooked.
This is not simply an accessory. It is especially suited to those who seek the feeling of wearing history, technique, and an appreciation of beauty. By incorporating it into everyday styling, it discreetly elevates your look.
For styling, it is recommended to add it to the neckline of a tailored jacket or a shirt to create classic elegance. You may also tuck it subtly inside a coat so that the pattern can be glimpsed as you move, or lightly wrap it around a simple top to highlight the scarf’s own sense of structure. No matter your gender, it can add an intelligent sense of spaciousness to your attire.
We invite you to take this opportunity.
