“LOEWE” Late 80’s-90’s Structured box vanity top handle bag

Introduced by LOEWE, a luxury maison that traces its origins to a leather workshop in Madrid in 1846 and has grown into a representative Spanish house through exceptional leather craftsmanship and refined design—this piece showcases the brand’s very beginnings in a small box-like bag.

Finished in understated black leather, shaped into an almost square, rigid form, with a rounded top handle at the top and a gold-colored latch engraved with the anagram at the front, this exceptional bag completes a distinct presence that feels positioned between a handbag and a leather case.

First, what draws the eye is the box-like structure, quite different from a typical handbag: rather than letting supple leather contour to the body, the design preserves the shape by rising in straight lines along all four sides—creating a composed, sculptural presence, as though you were carrying a small object in your hand.

With a slight bulge in the lid, it is not finished as a perfect cube; instead, it incorporates a softer curve. Providing ample thickness not only to the top handle that rises from the center, but also to the overall form, it delivers a substantial, weighty feel to the bag despite its compact size.

The black leather uses a tailoring choice that intentionally reveals brown-toned stitching. Because the seams are left carefully—from the outline of the lid, down to the base, and through to the points where the handle is connected—within a design that keeps the number of colors limited, the craftsmanship of stitching leather functions as a natural decorative element in itself.

Centered on the front is a vertically elongated gold-colored latch, and set into its center is the anagram formed by four L’s symbolizing LOEWE. Even with the classic combination of black and gold, it does not lean toward excessive showiness; instead, the maison’s emblem is incorporated as part of the structure, which is truly outstanding.

Because the leather tab extending from the top of the latch is finished with the same contrast stitching as the main body, the metal hardware does not look isolated. A visual flow is created that connects naturally from leather to metal, completing the opening-and-closing mechanism—an essential piece of real-world functionality—as design.

Furthermore, on the lower portion of the front, the LOEWE brand name is embossed subtly. From a distance it barely asserts itself; only up close does the brand come to the surface—an excellent balance. You can enjoy an old-LOEWE charm that does not push the logo to the forefront, instead making the leather tailoring and form the main focus.

At the base, gold-colored feet are placed at each of the four corners. This creates a practical structure that makes direct contact between the leather surface and the ground less likely when the bag is set down. At the same time, these fittings correspond with the front latch and the handle base, ensuring that the relationship between black leather and gold remains consistent from every angle.

When you open the lid, a bright ivory-toned interior appears—contrasting with the exterior. On the back side, there is a flap-style compartment crafted in black leather, resulting in a carefully constructed look as if a second internal structure emerges from the small outer box.

On the gold-colored plate placed at the top is the text LOEWE MADRID 1846. Considering the front old anagram, the thick hardware, the box-like structure, and the vintage logo plate as a whole, this piece can be positioned as a product from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s—particularly centered around the early 1990s.

In this era, LOEWE had a deep understanding of leather that still resonates with the maison today, yet its expression is more classical. Rather than transforming the material softly, the craftsmanship of precisely cutting, stitching, and completing it as a constructed object remains strongly evident—this piece embodies that appeal in a very accessible way.

There is also something uniquely interesting in how it transforms a vanity case-like form into a functional everyday handbag. By reimagining the form of a box for storage directly into an elegant accessory, it creates a presence that clearly stands apart from ordinary bags.

Because it is compact yet distinct in its own three-dimensional form, this piece—unlike bags that prominently display the brand logo—will especially appeal to those who wish to enjoy the leather tailoring and the refined atmosphere that only old luxury pieces offer. It is also for those who want to incorporate a bag into their styling with a sense closer to an accessory.

For styling, it looks beautiful simply as a single accent with a neat jacket, a long coat, or an outfit pairing a shirt with wide slacks. If you coordinate it with styles that emphasize vertical lines—such as dresses or long skirts—the bag’s linear form creates an elegant, balanced contrast.

Moreover, by pairing it with structured items such as leather outerwear or a set-up, you can make the bag’s box silhouette look even more modern. Without being bound by gender or age, you can bring it into your current look with the feeling of carrying a small leather case like a piece of jewelry.

Crafted as one integrated composition—from the box-like structure that protects the leather, to precise stitch work, the anagram-engraved latch, and even the small internal storage—this piece is an exceptional vintage item with added value. It is also a way to enjoy LOEWE’s leather craftsmanship in an extremely condensed form.

We would be delighted for you to experience it.
