“HERMÈS” 00’s Vendanges grape harvest silk carré 90

Founded in Paris in 1837 as a harness workshop, HERMÈS began its journey in silk scarves in 1937—carrying forward exceptional craftsmanship and an artistic sensibility. From HERMÈS, we present a charming piece that captures France’s rich harvest culture as if it were a painting.

Against a calm ivory background, this design spreads lush grape clusters and vine leaves tinged with reddish-brown. At its center sits a large woven basket, serving as the story’s main protagonist.

“Vendanges” means grape harvesting in French. In this motif, the theme is a rural landscape that signals the changing seasons, as well as the cultural practice of fruit transforming into wine. It reflects HERMÈS’s discerning eye—turning everyday work and nature’s bounty into beautiful decoration.

What is especially striking is the basket representation that occupies the heart of the composition. From the tightly rendered intersections of each strand in the weave to the depiction of overlapping branches along the border, every detail is meticulously differentiated. While it is a flat print, it creates a depth and warmth that make it feel as though it were truly hand-woven.

The grapes contained within the basket are portrayed with layered shadows that vary from bead to bead—featuring delicate grays and hints of blue—carefully expressing the three-dimensional fullness of rounded fruit. Meanwhile, the leaves surrounding them use rust-red and brown tones, forming a beautiful contrast that enhances the fruit’s soft expressions.

Moreover, while the central area gathers deep, rich color, the outer perimeter leaves ample ivory space. This balance helps the intricate overall pattern come together in a clean, composed impression. The composition harmonizes the splendor of the motif with understated elegance, revealing the Maison’s distinctive aesthetic sensibility—maintaining a refined presence even while using decoration abundantly.

In addition, the wooden support posts drawn on both sides are finished with delicate brushwork that even captures the texture of the tree bark, and the composition is such that slender vines intertwine into the scene. As a result, the viewer’s gaze naturally leads to the word “Vendanges” at the top, giving the feeling of a finished still life that captures a moment from the harvest.

When you look toward the lower part, you will find the word HERMÈS subtly placed on a wooden crate bearing grapes, and in the foreground sits harvesting shears. This is not merely a depiction of the beauty of fruit—it also incorporates, within the design, the human handwork involved in picking, carrying, and finishing. That depth is what makes this piece truly exceptional.

In such harvest scenes, one can feel not only the joy of benefiting from nature’s gifts, but also the meaning of guiding—through human hands—the things that have been cultivated over a long time toward completion. This beautifully aligns with HERMÈS’s approach to making products: selecting materials, building skill, and crafting a single piece. The special value of this item lies precisely in how it transforms the very landscape of everyday life into wearable art.

This design, titled Vendanges, was introduced in the autumn/winter collection of 2001. The design was created by Valérie Dawlat-Dumoulin. The title and author are recorded in the scarf materials from that time. Because the French silk notations that remain on the actual piece, the quality tags printed with both English and French, and the rolled-hem finishing on all four sides are consistent with the period, it is positioned as an archive from around 2001 to 2003.

The material is 100% silk. The smooth surface created by fine twill weaving beautifully reflects outlines and colors, and depending on how the light falls and how it is tied, it will gently change its expression—allowing you to enjoy the rich movement unique to a 90 carré scarf.

Furthermore, all four edges feature a plump hand-finished rolled hem. When spread out, it presents as a single artwork; when folded, the grapes’ pale tones and the warm hues of autumn leaves appear layered again and again as an abstract pattern. This is one of the charms only a large silk carré scarf can offer.

Rather than making a bold statement of color or pattern in your outfit, this scarf is especially recommended for those who want the selected piece to carry a background and a story. Through richly evocative motifs that feel distinctly French, you can naturally incorporate classic poise and artistic sensibility that suits any season.

For styling, you can lightly wrap it around the neck of a tailored jacket or a long coat and enjoy the motif peeking out from the edge as an accent. Of course, you can also drape it casually over one shoulder with a neat look combining a shirt and slacks, adding just the right amount of radiance and ease.

It is also an item you can enjoy for a long time in your own way, without being limited by gender or the formality of your outfit—whether softly tying it on a dress or tucking it alongside the handle of a leather bag. A piece filled with HERMÈS history and aesthetic sensibility.
