01 · HOW TO BUILD

What you need is the brands of that time and
It’s not about matching everything exactly.

Wear in the three essentials—outerwear that’s been used and softened, dark separates that read as vertically elongated, and rigid leather. With these as the base, add rock elements with a tie and a hat, then finally move away from nostalgic reenactment with sculptural shoes.

HOW TO BUILD

First, connect a black shirt and dark-toned trousers to create a single vertical line down the center of your body.

Then layer faded denim and leather outerwear over that to add a vintage-like roughness to the uniformly black look. Keep the decoration concentrated around the neckline and waist area, not spread across the whole body.

Finally, choose black shoes with distinctive shapes—square-toe, heels, tabi-style, and the like—rather than typical rock boots.

02 · LONDON BACKGROUND

Where music and clothing intersect,
The indie-rock era that changed silhouettes.

London fashion has a history in which music and clothing have shaped each other’s images. What we’re referencing here isn’t the Punk of the 1970s itself, but a style where indie rock, photography, fashion media, and luxury brands intersected—something that emerged in the 2000s afterward.

Hedi Slimane at Dior Homme connected an extremely slender silhouette with rock, greatly influencing men’s wear in the 2000s. Vogue also frames it as how slim jeans and suits changed men’s silhouettes, evolving into a phenomenon that linked Dior Homme with rock.

Hedi Slimane also documented the London music scene centered on Pete Doherty and Babyshambles in the 2005 photo book “London Birth of a Cult.”

The style now known as “London core” is not a fixed set of historical rules. Here, it’s understood as a name for re-editing those British elements—rock music, vintage clothing, slim-fitting clothes, hats, and boots—into today’s archived fashion.

03 · THIS LOOK

That make up the styling,
The passage of time and a luxurious finish.

Now this base is a vintage black linen shirt and charcoal-toned striped trousers.

Tuck the shirt into the trousers and define the waist with an eyelet belt to make the upper body look shorter and the legs longer. The trousers aren’t fully skinny; they keep a moderate amount of ease through the thighs with a straight line. Rather than recreating the same level of tightness, it takes only the vertical impression.

The denim jacket layered on top has a length that covers the waist and comparatively narrow sleeves, without broadly widening the lines of your whole look. Faded indigo and scuffed texture add the passage of time to outfits centered on black.

ACCESSORY LOGIC

With a PRADA tie, you don’t tie it correctly at the shirt collar—you wrap it once around your neck and let it hang thinly.

Prada Tie Styled loosely on collar

This is a way to soften the formal meaning of a tie and convert it into a rock accessory closer to a choker or scarf. By concentrating the decoration around the face, it creates an entry point for the eye even within dark color palettes.

A USED casquette adds muted brown to an all-black head, functioning as an element that evokes London’s classic hat culture. Paired with Yves Saint Laurent sunglasses, it keeps the retro hat from being remembered too nostalgically.

An Yves Saint Laurent bag with studs, an eyelet belt, and Maison Margiela Tabi boots repeat leather and metal in different locations. Especially the Tabi boots—by shifting the silhouette away from typical rock boots, they play the role of completing the LOOK as archive fashion.

04 · WHY IT WORKS

With this outfit,
The reason it works beautifully—and functionally.

Old vintage roughness tuned to urban black. Three logics for controlling layered textures by removing excessive damage.

DARK VERTICAL LINE

By connecting the shirt and pants in dark tones and adding fine stripes, you can achieve a vertical look without using an extreme skinny.

WORN AND POLISHED

You pair faded denim with a USED casquette, then match it with glossy bags, belts, and boots. The contrast between worn textures and a luxury finish creates a blend of London-style vintage and designer fashion.

ROCK WITH CONTROL

There are decorative details on the tie, belt, and bag, but the shirt and pants are crisp and composed. Without making everything rough, and by limiting the rock elements to accessories, we prevent the look from becoming costume-like.

05 · ROLE MAP

ROLE MAP · The roles of each piece

Dark vertical lines as the base—each piece is arranged in an orderly way, balancing leather and metal with accents of anonymity.

ROLE ITEM FUNCTION
BASE Linen shirt, trousers Create dark vertical lines.
CONNECT Denim jacket Connect the roughness of vintage with an urban black.
ACCENT PRADA tie Turn formalwear into rock accessories.
ACCENT Belt, YSL bag Add hardness with leather and metal.
FINISH Casquette, sunglasses Add anonymity and a sense of the era around the face.
FINISH Maison Margiela Tabi boots Shift the shape away from a familiar rock look.
HOW TO TRY
LEVEL TRY
EASY Layer a faded denim jacket over a black shirt and dark straight pants.
STANDARD Loosely wrap a thin tie around your neck, and add a single piece like an eyelet belt or a leather bag.
HIGH-END Use multiple black materials, adjust the placement of the metal and the length of the pants, then finish with sculptural boots.
WHAT TO KEEP

What should remain are the dark vertical, elongated lines; the contrast between faded fabric and leather; and a small amount of metal placed at the neck or around the waist.

WHAT CAN CHANGE

A denim jacket can be swapped for a slim leather jacket or a military jacket, and trousers can be changed to black straight denim. Taboots are not a must. You can substitute with familiar black shoes that deviate slightly from the usual—slim heeled boots or square-toe boots, for example.

AVOID

Using all of the damaged denim, chains, studs, band T-shirts, and black leather at once can make the look feel like a rock musician’s costume. Also, to recreate that slimness, you don’t have to turn your entire outfit into an extreme skinny fit. Rather than aiming for slimness alone, it’s more natural as a current styling to keep a continuous dark tone and vertical lines.

TAKEAWAY · RE-EDIT ARCHIVE

- TAKEAWAY

The key to recreating London’s Y2K isn’t collecting the trend pieces of the time—it’s embracing the sensibility where music, vintage, and luxury coexist. Pair faded outerwear with impeccably tailored, dark separates, keeping decorations limited to the neck and waist. Finally, add sculptural shoes to update the rock of the past into today’s archive style.
Postscript · A touch of MOOD

Reconstruct the boundary between music and clothing with a new aesthetic.

We evoke the fusion of an era and culture in 2000s London—where Eddie Slimane blended a slim silhouette and indie rock into the world of luxury.

Rather than simply retracing the skinny silhouette of those days, build on dark, vertical lines and the worn texture of vintage pieces. Loosely wrap the tie around your neck to “break the form.” Then, by adding modern, sculptural boots at the finish, the afterimage of the past moves beyond nostalgia—replaced by a polished, contemporary archive fashion.
