Meanwhile, Street in New York is not a word that signals a single prevailing trend.

Workwear, sportswear, skate culture, hip-hop, immigrant culture, designer brands—clothing from different backgrounds has been rearranged in the streets and within communities.

Hip-hop, too—born in the South Bronx in the 1970s—was a culture that created new value from its own environment through music, dance, language, and clothing. After that, baggy silhouettes, sneakers, jewelry, logos, and custom wear influenced even luxury fashion.

The two differences are not simply that one has history and the other has freedom.

Is it about making garments that already hold authority your own? Or creating your own authority from everyday wear?

There is a distinctly New York commonality in the way the meaning of clothing is redefined by each person, starting from different points.

In this LOOK, a vintage white shirt, a navy V-neck knit, a jacket, and slacks create a refined structure.

However, we do not align everything exactly according to the formula, as if dressing for school.

Instead of suddenly adding only a large bag, you make it blend in by repeating its color across the whole outfit in small amounts.

Preppy keeps an authentic framework and adds personal choices. Street keeps an everyday foundation and brings in different values.

When you consider which of the two approaches you are drawn to, you start to see tendencies in how you choose clothing—not in brand names.

However, the way you use them differs significantly.

Even with the same scarf: if you keep it slim at the neckline, it becomes a rephrasing of the classic. If you wrap it boldly around your head, it becomes the lead element that changes the relationship across the entire LOOK.
